S For Serena Williams

Serena Williams is considered the greatest tennis player of all time. She has held the top slot for 319 weeks in a row (according to the Women’s Tennis Association). We all know her not just as the best player, but also as a champion of women’s rights. particularly of Black women. She’s also spoken extensively on gender equality and motherhood. Here’s the quote I liked the most.

We work just as hard as men do. And to be paid less just because of my sex — it doesn’t seem fair.

Discrimination in pay on the basis of gender is nothing new. Celebrities in cinema and sports have spoken about it extensively and yet, the discrimination continues. Not just that, women don’t find themselves in top slots in the workforce too. Women bosses are considered arrogant and men simply don’t want to work under them. According to the latest survey on remuneration trends and index by Mercer, the gender pay parity in February this year in India was at 1.8 per cent. Besides, the gap is the least (1.4 per cent) at the para-professional level, and when it reaches the executive level, the gap widens significantly (2.5 per cent). The numbers speak for themselves. Recently, Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra was also vocal about the pay gap based on gender. At the time and age we are in, women have proved that they are as able and capable to take on any roles and responsibilities on par with men. When that is the case, the gender gap needs to be closed too, don’t you agree?
