R For Ruth Bader Ginsburg

American lawyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was the Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the US from 1993 until 2020 when she passed away. Justice Ruth was the first Jewish woman and was nominated by the then President Bill Clinton to replace Justice Byron White who was retiring.

Justice Ruth has spoken extensively on women, feminism and women’s rights but one quote of hers that has stayed with me is this:

Women will have achieved true equality when men share with them the responsibility of bringing up the next generation.

We are living in a time when many men are hands-on fathers and yet, in many households, childcare is still a mother’s primary responsibility, at least in India. Whether it is schooling, homework, activities–anything at all, it all falls within the purview of the mother’s JD. Husbands continue to be the primary earning members of the family while women continue to balance between work and home. You never hear a man mention that he is finding it difficult to balance work plus family. If the child needs attention, women are expected to quit work and attend to it as a priority. Until men step up, not as helping the wife, but truly with an intention to contribute, equality is still a distant dream. I say this because in many families, at least in India and in Indian families abroad, whenever a man takes care of the child/children or the family while the wife is away travelling, he is doing the wife a favour; he is helping her. This attitude has to change, don’t you agree?

  1. Women will also achieve true equality when single and child-free ( by choice) women are respected. Bringing it up here ‘coz there are way too many conversations about men, women, children and matrimony etc. and far fewer conversations about single women. Are they invisible?
