V For Venus Williams

American professional tennis player is a former no. 1 and is considered one of the greatest players the game has had. Like her sister Serena, Venus has also been very outspoken about women, women’s sports, gender bias and other issues. Here’s what stuck with me.

The message I like to convey to women and girls across the globe is that there is no glass ceiling.

The glass ceiling, as we all know is a metaphor that implies an invisible barrier preventing women from rising to senior positions. The opportunities lie in front of you, but something prevents you from reaching there, even though you may be best suited for them. We have often heard phrases like, ‘smashing the glass ceiling’ or ‘breaking the glass ceiling’ from women who have been able to go past the barriers to succeed. Venus Williams goes a step ahead to inspire women saying that the barriers don’t exist in the first place. We need to dream, believe in ourselves, and move ahead and grab the opportunities head-on! And that’s what I call a smashing shot!
